Why Yancheng for a Foreign-Founded Company
Yancheng sits on the Yellow Sea coast in northern Jiangsu, roughly midway between Shanghai and Qingdao. It is best known economically for three clusters: new energy (wind turbine manufacturing and offshore wind), automotive parts, and agricultural processing. The city also hosts a growing electronics and photovoltaic component base.
For foreign founders, the appeal is practical rather than prestige:
- Cost base: industrial land, warehouse rents and salaries generally sit below southern Jiangsu cities such as Suzhou, Wuxi and Changzhou.
- Supply chain access: proximity to Shanghai and the Yangtze Delta via expressway and the Xuzhou–Yancheng high-speed rail line.
- Port access: Dafeng Port and the broader Yancheng port area handle bulk and project cargo, useful for equipment-heavy sectors.
- Fewer crowded sectors: less saturated than tier-one cities for manufacturing support services.
Yancheng is not a financial or fintech hub. Founders in trading, consulting, software or consumer brands should weigh whether a Yancheng entity or a Shanghai/Suzhou entity better matches their clients and hiring pool.
